Information about cashew tree

Cashew tree is a very fast-growing tropical tree. Usually, this tree grows from about 13 to 14 meters. It is a tree that produces cashew seeds and cashew apples. But its short variety grows up to 6 m, which has proved to be more profitable with higher yields. This tree often grows with a trunk of irregular shape. Cashew seeds, often referred to as cashew nuts, are widely consumed.

Cashew’s Leaves

Cashew tree leaves spirally arranged, leather-textured, elliptic to objetate, about 5 to 20 cm  long and 3 to 16 cm wide, with smooth margins.

Cashew’s Flower

The flowers grown on cashew tree are produced in a panicle or chorimb up to about 25 cm. Each of its flowers is first small, light green and then red, 6mm to 15 mm long with five slender, acute petals.

The fruit of cashew tree i.e., cashew nut is a useful fruit. The shape of its fruit appears to be that it is an oval or pear-shaped structure. Its fruit is edible and has a strong sweet smell and taste. The fruit of cashew tree grows in kidney or boxed-glove shaped droop. The drupe first grows on the tree, and then the pedicel spreads to become a cashew apple. Cashew apple’s flesh is very juicy, but its skin is very delicate.

Where is cashew found and grown?

Originally found in South America and North-Eastern Brazil. Portuguese traders brought it to Goa for the first time in India in the 16th century. It is cultivated on the west coast of India, especially in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and other areas.
